The environmental cost of technology
E-waste Ecosystem
Learn about the compounding environmental threat posed by the unmanaged accumulation of electronic waste in our environments.
Because the vast majority of electronic waste is completely unaccounted for, the environmental damage directly correlates to the massive volume of unmanaged hardware accumulating in global landfills, ecosystems, and incinerators year over year.
The line chart below tracks the projected path of this unmanaged e-waste burden:
The Over-Time Ecological Impact Break Down
-
The Compounding Mass: In 2015, approximately 34.5 million metric tonnes of generated e-waste missed the proper recycling loop and went straight to unmanaged disposal streams. By 2024, that annual volume jumped to 49.3 million metric tonnes, and it is on track to hit a staggering 63.7 million metric tonnes per year by 2030 if consumer and enterprise habits remain unchanged.
-
The Toxicity Factor: This line represents millions of tons of lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame-retardant plastics building up in the biosphere. Over time, physical degradation causes these toxic materials to leach through the soil, posing severe contamination threats to regional groundwater aquifers and local habitats.
-
Air and Soil Degradation: In areas without strict corporate environmental frameworks, this unmanaged e-waste is frequently subjected to low-temperature open burning to strip out basic metals, releasing highly toxic dioxins and furans straight into the atmosphere.

Forever Plastics
These are not standard plastics; they are heavily treated with hazardous flame retardants, ensuring they remain in the environment as “forever plastics” that are both highly stable and chemically toxic.
E-Waste Environmental Hazards
Every time a functional computer tower, server component, or length of copper cabling is thrown into a landfill, it forces the global manufacturing chain to mine completely new “virgin” raw materials out of the earth.
Carbon Offset
Balancing our responsibility of our resources.
E-Waste Growth
The global surge of discarded computers and mobile devices have become our newest environmental challenge.
