While the Honey Bee is our state symbol, Utah is actually a global “hotspot” for bee diversity.

1,100+ Native Species: Utah is home to more than 1,100 species of native bees—nearly a quarter of all species found in North America.

Solitary Strength: Roughly 90% of these species are solitary, meaning they don’t live in hives. Each female works alone to build a nest in the ground or in hollow stems.

Specialists vs. Generalists: Many of our local bees are “specialists” that have evolved to pollinate only one specific type of plant, such as the Squash Bee or the Cactus Bee. If these bees disappear, those specific plants cannot reproduce.
2. Superior Pollination Mechanics
Native bees are often far more efficient than honey bees due to their unique physical behaviors:

“Buzz Pollination” (Sonication): Some plants, like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, hold their pollen tightly in their anthers. Bumble Bees can unhinge their flight muscles and vibrate their entire bodies at a specific frequency to “shatter” the pollen loose. Honey bees cannot do this.

Dry vs. Wet Transport: Honey bees mix pollen with nectar to carry it in “baskets” on their legs. Solitary bees, like Mason Bees and Leafcutter Bees, carry pollen dry on the underside of their abdomens. Because the pollen is loose and dry, it falls off more easily as they move between flowers, leading to a much higher rate of successful cross-pollination.

Ground-Nesting Benefits: Most of our native bees nest in the ground. Their tunnels help aerate the soil and allow water to penetrate deeper into the ground, which is vital for aquifer recharge in the Salt Lake Basin and Cache Valley.

If you look closely at your bee sanctuary, you will likely see these three distinct groups:

A Pro-Tip for Your Sanctuary
To truly support these bees, leave small patches of bare, undisturbed ground in your yard. Most of our 1,100 species need access to soft, dry soil to dig their tiny nursery tunnels. A perfectly mulched or grassed yard is essentially a “no-fly zone” for a ground-nesting bee!
